A discussion on Afro Futures; AFF2.0+CAADA

To futures of unimaginable liberation, Afrofuturist motivations and creative expressions find themselves within the most unsuspecting motifs. This virtual exhibition is an ode to young Afro and Afrodiasporic artists who continually produce culture and harness AFF2.0 in unlikley ways.

I like to reimagine or imagine mostly like mixes between sci-fi and Caribbean culture and traditions. I'd say like one of my goals, well, one of the things that I have in mind would be to have my own gallery or a Community Center where young Black artists can actually come and learn about the art world, how to create more and probably put on exhibitions? But before that I'd like to just like put on exhibitions and networking events for like young Black artists in the UK.

Yeah I just want people to be able to look at the work and go like yes, I identify with this. This is wooshy. I want to be a person that is, like a cultural figure that is known to people who like counterculture. Like I feel like it's my responsibility to not make Blackness corny and consumable.

I didn't do this alone like I'm not some miracle who just gave birth to himself and just raised himself, so many people had a hand in my upbringing, That's where that quality of ubuntu is. It's really prominent in what im doing. I genuinely believe that we're like conduits, so anything that I ever make, anything, I ever make, it didn't come off me, it came through me.

Im not only an artist I'm also an art historian and curator. My responsibilities to my community is to document and centralise information, I feel like we have so many academic essays and journals on topics of Nigerian history, if a Nigerian teenager wants to pick up a book on Nigerian art history, the best they get is a coffee table book, which is not a textbook and is also more expensive. It's about having more accessible ways of learning about Nigerian History.

I think there's a responsibility to European Black narratives and working class Black narratives. Even within the art scene, I think right now there's a lot of emphasis on Black artists to represent blackness to the outer community. I believe in the larger responsibility that is owed to just the Black community, not thinking about anybody else. There's responsibility to also be inward focused.
